Mount Tukuhnikivatz

USA> Moab> La Sal Mountains> Central La Sals>

Overview

hike5.0adv

Mt Tukuhnikivatz is the best of 3 primary peaks in the Central La Sals. It's not the highest summit, but it has the best views and the most dramatic terrain. The going is tough with steep slopes and a difficult scree section just below the summit, but the total distance is relatively short and the views and sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile.

Getting there

Planning your trip

open accessdogs leashedjun - octany vehicle

We recommend driving through the town of La Sal and entering the mountains from the south. These roads are well maintained and suitable for highway vehicles all the way up to the trailhead at La Sal Pass. La Sal Pass Road crosses one small stream on the way up but by summer it's usually less than a foot deep and the roadbed is cemented for easy passage.

A shorter route from Moab is theoretically possible by taking La Sal Mountain Loop Road up out of Moab Valley and then taking La Sal Pass Road to arrive at the trailhead from the north. However this shorter route requires four wheel drive and climbs northern slopes that are more likely to be obstructed by snow. We recommend the longer, southern route because this approach is more reliable.
