Overview

hike3.8adv

This exciting hike climbs Mt Peale, the highest summit in the La Sal Mountains. You start on an old jeep road, then climb steeply through scattered conifer on an unofficial trail marked by cairns. You climb steeply up the bottom of a dramatic v-shaped couloir to the crest, then follow the crest past a false summit to the top. There are great views throughout the upper section. This hike is short but intense. Be prepared for high altitude and a lot of steep climbing through rough, rocky terrain.

Getting there

Planning your trip

As you drive up La Sal Pass Road, watch for an unmarked junction where Forest Road 4725 branches off on the right.

If you have 4WD, drive up to the end of FR 4725 and start the hike from there.

If you don't have 4WD, park near the junction and walk up FR 4725 to the trailhead. This adds 10-15 minutes walking each way.
