Big Split - Left Fork

USA> Palm Springs> Mecca Hills>

Overview

hike4.5adv

This fantastic hike climbs the Left Fork of Big Split Rock Canyon. Along the way are colorful geology, convoluted narrows, hanging slabs, tight squeezes, short scrambles and long stretches of dramatic, twisty slot canyon. Ladders installed over the last few years make the upper canyon accessible with beginner scrambling skills. Use caution as there are still a few spots with dangerous exposure. It's best to wear long sleeves and pants to avoid scrapes from the scratchy canyon walls.

Park in the large clearing at the end of Painted Canyon Road. The hike begins by walking back down the road for about 5 minutes to the junction with Big Split Rock Canyon, the first major canyon entering from the left (east) side of the road.

If you have an off-road vehicle, or if the surface conditions are favorable, it's sometimes possible to park right at the entrance to Big Split Rock Canyon.
