USA> Palm Springs> Mecca Hills>

Overview

hike4.0adv

This hike follows the Meccacopia Trail along the east edge of the Mecca Hills then loops back through Little Box Canyon. You start off on pavement, then follow a jeep road to a broad plain with views of foothills sloping away to the Salton Sea. Next there's an exciting part down a twisting slot canyon through a natural tunnel called The Grotto. Then you visit the Hidden Springs palm oasis and climb a ridge to a panoramic high point. Finally you descend a jeep road through another canyon to close the loop.

Dogs

Are dogs allowed?

Park off the side of Box Canyon Road near the mouth of Little Box Canyon. No facilities are provided.

If you have two vehicles you can stage one at the mouth of Little Box Canyon and park the other at the Meccacopia trailhead to skip the walk along the paved road.

Flashlights can be useful for the darkest parts of The Grotto but you can get away with the illumination from a smartphone in a pinch.
