This fantastic hike loops through varied terrain on the east edge of the Mecca Hills. You follow rolling ridgetops with great views of the Salton Sea. Climb tapering canyons with convoluted outcrops of multicolored geology. Navigate twisting narrows with slots and "grottos" (dark tunnels formed by overhanging slabs). There's even a small palm oasis on the way back. Intermediate scrambling and off-trail navigation make this a challenging adventure. It's best to use GPS and bring flashlights for the tunnels.
