When we last went in 2010 a washout along Summit Rd 3 miles (5 km) from the trailhead prevented passage of highway vehicles due to heavy sand. We went the rest of the way on foot making for 6 miles (10 km) roundtrip of hot and tedious extra walking.
It's possible the road may have been recently maintained and in better condition but it's uncertain so your best bet is to play it safe and use a 4WD vehicle.
