This rewarding hike explores wild terrain in the Mecca Hills. You start off in Big Colorful Canyon past scrub trees and rock layers upheaved by tectonic activity. Next you follow a twisting tributary with narrows and interesting erosional formations. Eventually you reach a dramatic slot canyon with a "cave" formed by overhanging slabs. There's no trail but the wash bottoms are usually smooth and firm, making for easy going. For a longer hike explore other branches of the upper canyon.
