Overview

hike3.8adv

This challenging hike climbs Mauna Loa via the Observatory Trail. Highlights include big views, a stunning summit caldera, dramatic cliffs, a variety of lava and an otherworldly environment without a single living thing. You'll face strenuous climbs, hours of rough terrain and prolonged exposure to altitude. Wear sun protection, bring lots of water and be prepared to turn back at signs of mountain sickness. Wear layers as even mild mornings can turn into dangerously cold and windy afternoons.

Park in the small lot on the left (south) side of the road just before it forks. The hike begins by walking up the right fork of the road.

Check the weather before heading up. Conditions at the summit may be mild, but they can become dangerously cold and windy and sometimes the entire area gets covered in snow.
