This hike gives you a good, close look at the effects of volcanic activity. The trail cuts across mostly barren lava fields past Mauna Ulu, the heart of the 1969-1974 eruption of Kilauea Volcano. Along the way are complex lava formations, steaming vents and Pu'u Huluhulu, an older tree-covered cone that provides good views of the surrounding area. At the far point of the hike you reach Makaopuhi, a large crater surrounded by sheer cliffs and native forest.
