Mauna Kea

Overview

hike4.3exp

A steep and difficult hike to the summit of Mauna Kea, the highest point in Hawaii. Along the way are dramatic views, volcano craters and long stretches of steep, sandy cinder. At the top is a series of astronomical observatories. The bad news is there's a road paralleling the trail all the way up so you'll probably share the summit with people who have driven to the top. The good news is you may be able to ask someone for a ride back down, but don't count on it.
