Kuki'o Makalawena

USA> Hawaii> Big Island>

Overview

hike3.0adv

This hike rewards you with three beautiful white sand beaches, luminous blue water and stretches of white coral and black lava shoreline. As a bonus, there's a good chance of seeing sea turtles and maybe even dolphins. The downside is you have to cross a couple lava deserts where the trail sometimes vanishes and the going can be very rough.

After turning off the highway head straight for the security checkpoint at the entrance to the Four Seasons Resort/Hualalai Golf Course. Just tell the guard you're heading for the beach, if necessary using the phrase "beach access", and they'll let you through.

(Beach hike; CEK route based on Doughty & Friedman map page 146; see Sprout TH16 page 67, TH17 page 71, TH18 page 72; includes 3 "real gem" beaches: Kua Bay, Makalawena and Kona Coast State Park)
