South Point

Overview

hike4.0int

South Point is the southernmost point in the USA. This hike follows a stretch of colorful coastline dotted with orange soil, grassy plains and black lava outcrops. Eventually you reach Green Sand Beach, a beautiful cove formed by ocean waves breaking down half of an old crater and eroding deposits of olivine stone. It's a relaxing hike with big open space, ocean views, a chance of seeing monk seals and perhaps a refreshing dip in the ocean if conditions are safe.

Dogs

Are dogs allowed?

No permission or fee is required to park and hike from the trailhead indicated.

It's possible for highway vehicles to park a little further east at the actual end of South Point Road, though you may be asked to pay for parking. This would shorten your hike if you're primarily interested in getting to Green Sand Beach.

Off-road vehicles can drive from the end of South Point Road all the way to Green Sand Beach if you're not in the mood for walking along the coast.
