This challenging and rewarding hike follows Aiea Ridge to the Ko'olau Summit. The first section on the well-maintained Aiea Loop Trail is easy. The middle section on the Aiea Ridge Trail is narrow, rough and often overgrown with scratchy vegetation. The upper portion of the Ridge Trail is the hardest and most rewarding part, climbing steeply up a muddy, rutted and slippery trail past dramatic open sections with good views. The Ko'olau Summit offers sweeping views of the windward coast.

Drive into Keaiwa Heiau State Park and bear right around the one-way loop road. You'll pass a series of small parking lots along the way. The hike starts next to a lot with facilities in the uppermost portion of the loop.
The park is very popular and the uppermost lot tends to fill up early, even on weekdays. If there are no free spaces at the top you may have to repeat the drive around the loop and park in one of the lower lots.
