This challenging hike follows the easternmost portion of the Ko'olau Summit Trail from Makapu'u Point to Kuli'ou'ou Valley. Along the way are great views, towering cliffs, dramatic narrow sections and a variety of plant ecosystems. Lots of up and down climbing and narrow sections with big vertical exposure make this route suitable for experienced hikers only. Bailout points along the way offer options for shortening the hike if time or energy run out.

It's best to plan on doing this as a one-way hike due to the elevation gain and challenging conditions along the KST. Starting from the east end means you'll have the morning sun behind you, but you could of course hike the route in either direction.
If you have two vehicles, drop one off at the upper end of Kuli'ou'ou Road and drive the other to the Makapu'u Overlook parking lot. If not, a good option would be to park on Kuli'ou'ou Road and take the bus to Sea Life Park.
