This hike climbs the Skyline Trail to the summit of Haleakala. It's a long aerobic workout climbing moderately steep jeep roads. You start off in mixed forest, transition to scrub greenery and finish in a lunar landscape of craters and eroded lava. The highlight on clear days is frequent views of West Maui and the surrounding islands. Be prepared for a long, physically demanding hike at altitude. Bring plenty of food and water and wear sun protection. Check the forecast as cloud cover can spoil the views.

Follow Waipoli road up a series of switchbacks. Shortly after the last switchback the pavement ends and Waipoli road becomes a dirt road. Signs say 4WD only beyond this point.
If you have a 4WD vehicle you should have little trouble reaching the traditional trailhead. Continue along Waipoli road to its far southwest corner where it first reaches Haleakala Ridge at 6,600 ft (2,000 m) elevation. You could even shorten the hike by driving several miles up the Skyline Trail to the first gate at 8,200 ft (2,500 m).
Depending how recently it has rained and how recently the road has been maintained, it may be possible to reach the trailhead in a 2WD vehicle. The risk is you may get stuck in a deep rut or mud bog, and you may not have cell reception. Use your judgment.
