This challenging hike climbs from the floor of Bartlett Valley to the western tip of Big Mesa. Along the way are a pretty wash, colorful cliffs, dramatic spires and ridges, continuous desert views and exciting clifftop terrain along a convoluted slickrock rim. The challenges include lots of vertical exposure and several grueling stretches scrambling through steep soil with scratchy brush. This can be an exciting adventure if you enjoy route-finding through dramatic terrain to reach rarely visited places.
open accessapr - oct4WD vehicle
We once reached the start point in a 2WD vehicle with decent clearance but it's risky due to sandy stretches along the final road segment. Your best bet for 2WD is to park at the turn-off from BLM 137 and walk from there. This would add about 4 km (2.5 mi) roundtrip to the hike.
4WD vehicles with high clearance can continue along the road all the way to the wash. This would shorten the hike by 4 km (2.5 mi) roundtrip.
