This challenging and exciting hike climbs to the summit of Ohikilolo then returns via Kea'au Middle Ridge. Along the way are dirt roads, a steep climb, a long fenced ridgetop, a mountain cabin, a dramatic summit, a dangerous traverse over narrow rocky crags with lethal drops on either side, and a steep descent back to the valley floor. The summit and ridgetops offer continuous panoramic views. Bring lots of water and don't go unless you're comfortable with advanced scrambling and dangerous exposure.

Park along the side of the highway outside the gate at the beginning of Kea'au Homesteads Road.
If the gate is open you could drive up Kea'au Homesteads Road and park at the end of the pavement, shortening the hike by 0.8 miles (1.3 km) roundtrip. However the gate may be locked at unpredictable times so it's best to play it safe and park along the highway.
