This hike climbs to the summit of Kea'au Ridge from Makaha Beach, then returns via Water Tank Ridge and the valley floor. Along the way are an eroded jeep road, a long hot climb with awkward footing, a rewarding ridgetop climb with lots of scrambling, dramatic terrain, narrow sections and panoramic views over two valleys. There's not much of a trail so it's best if you're experienced with route-finding. The descent ridge requires advanced scrambling skills. Start early and bring plenty of water.

Park in the lot for Makaha Beach Park on the mauka (mountain) side of the highway. The Park provides restrooms and an open air shower. It's quite refreshing to swim in the ocean after a sweaty hike.
