This hike climbs the Left Fork of Big Split Rock Canyon then loops back through Painted Canyon. Along the way are colorful rock formations, dramatic twisty slot canyons, hanging slabs and boulders, ladder-assisted climbs, rolling backcountry terrain and panoramic views of the Mecca Hills and Salton Sea. To get the most out of this exciting hike it's best if you're comfortable with some vertical exposure and squeezing through narrow spaces. You'll want a map to navigate the backcountry portion.

Park in a broad sandy area on the right (southeast) side of the road. No facilities are provided.
If you reach the end of the road blocked by boulders, you've gone a little too far. Turn around and drive back downhill for a couple minutes, watching for the pullout on the left.
