Overview

hike3.3exp

This hike loops down Ramp Canyon, up Cistern Canyon and returns via the Behind the Reef ATV trail. Along the way are soaring sandstone cliffs, colorful canyon narrows, contorted slot sections, remote backcountry and twisty washes. Most of the loop is non-technical but there's one obstacle in Ramp Canyon that requires a 50ft (15m) length of rope and the skill to use it. It's best to start with Ramp Canyon so you hit the obstacle near the beginning and can turn back early if needed.

Getting there

Planning your trip

open accessdogs iffyapr - oct4WD vehicle

Hidden Splendor Mine Road is usually well maintained allowing highway vehicles to comfortably reach the intersection with the Behind the Reef Trail. From the intersection it's 1.4 mi (2.3 km) to the trailhead.

4WD is a safe bet for driving all the way to the trailhead. 2WD vehicles with good clearance can often make it part or most of the way with caution and skillful driving. Just remember you're a long way from civilization and there's probably no cell reception in the area. When in doubt, park before it gets too rough and walk the rest of the way.
