Overview

hike3.0int

This hike climbs the South Lykken Trail above Palm Springs. You start with a long approach on mostly-quiet city streets. Next you hit the trail and climb a steep flank up graded switchbacks. The middle portion of the trail is a long traverse with picnic tables at both ends and continuous views over the Coachella Valley. Finally a zigzag descent down a dramatic ridge closes the loop. This is a popular workout trail but not overly crowded. There's no shade so bring water and wear sun protection.

Park on Mesquite Ave near its intersection with Belardo Road.

There are trailheads at both ends of the South Lykken Trail. The route as described starts at the north end, follows city streets to the south end, then returns north on the trail.

To avoid the long stretch of city streets you could alternatively use a vehicle shuttle or hike the Lykken Trail in both directions.
