Overview

hike4.8exp

This epic hike climbs the Skyline Trail from Palm Springs to the summit of Mt San Jacinto. You start in the desert near sea level and finish at high altitude in conifer forest. There are great views all along and a fantastic 360 degree panorama from the top. The route is notoriously challenging with a long day of relentless climbing and a daunting 10,000 ft (3,000 m) of elevation gain. The good news is you can ride the tram back down. Don't attempt this unless you're sure of your abilities.

Check the tram schedule and availability beforehand. Also check the weather forecast and avoid going if there's a chance of storms in the mountains.

Be sure to leave early enough to finish the hike before nightfall. It's often best to start before dawn, especially during warmer months when temperatures can be uncomfortably hot at lower elevations.

Needless to say you'll need plenty of food and water. You should be prepared for everything from hot and dry to cold and wet conditions. Some people bring special footwear when there's snow in the summits.
