This pleasant hike loops through the Nu'u Refuge. You start off under tree cover along a scalloped rock wall decorated with petroglyphs. Next you follow an old road across an open field of rough 'a'a lava, visiting two beaches with coastal views, crashing waves and colorful shorelines of gray rock and white coral pebbles. Finally you return along the highway, stopping to visit a lush fishpond with endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots. The loop rewards you with many interesting features for modest effort.
