This hike explores Sonoma Coast State Park from the Russian River to Russian Gulch Creek. You work your way up the wild coast, negotiating a series of dramatic coves featuring pristine beaches, teeming tide pools, rocky spires and sea arches. You may see birds, crabs and harbor seals. There's no official trail and the coves are ringed by steep hillsides, making access challenging. Your best bet is to climb down to each cove on faint trails, then double back and walk along the bluff tops to the next one.

Park in one of several small pullouts just north of the Russian River Mouth. The hike begins by descending to the beach below and heading north along the shoreline.
If you have two vehicles, stage one at Russian Gulch State Beach so you can drive back after the hike. If not, you can walk back to the starting point along the highway shoulder. This can be unpleasant, especially with weekend traffic, but only takes about 30 minutes.
