This rewarding hike covers Merita Beach and the Fig Tree Loop Track. You start off along a beautiful beach past pohutukawa-studded rocky points and small islands in Waikato Bay. Next you climb through forest and up a steep slope to a summit with panoramic views of the surrounding area. Finally you descend a satisfying ridge back down to the beach. Steep spots just below the summit can be quite slippery when wet. As of 2017, signs say the loop is closed but the trail is passable as long as you're careful.
