Mount Whitney

USA> Southern Sierra>

Overview

hike4.8exp

This epic hike climbs Mt Whitney, the highest summit in the US outside Alaska. The rough, well-marked trail climbs past conifer trees, green valleys, lakes, granite canyons, lots of switchbacks and a long stony traverse. The summit offers 360 degree views over the high Sierra and Owens Valley. Strong hikers may do this as a 12-16 hour day hike but many are better off camping mid-way. Be prepared for high elevation: bring extra water, wear lots of sun protection and know the signs of altitude sickness.

Dogs

Are dogs allowed?

Permits are required year-round and a quota limits the number of hikers between May 1st and November 1st, with spaces allocated by lottery. The route is very popular so it's best to apply months in advance.
