This celebrated hike climbs from Palm Springs to a tram station overlooking the Coachella Valley. Steep singletrack trails lead up the flank of Mt San Jacinto from desert foothills to soaring granite highlands in conifer forest. You'll enjoy big panoramic views and an even bigger sense of accomplishment, plus a fun ride back down. Don't go unless you're confident you can handle the relentless elevation gain. Bring plenty of food and water and avoid days when it's hot at the bottom or snowy at the top.
open accessoct - aprany vehicle
The Palm Springs Art Museum offers convenient parking for hikers in a covered structure just across the street from the trailhead.
Make sure you don't miss the last tram ride back down. Many people start hiking before dawn, both to allow extra time and to minimize heat exposure at lower elevations.
You can either stage a vehicle at the lower tram station in advance, or hail a taxi after riding back down.
Avoid going on hot days - late fall through early spring is generally best. Also check to make sure the upper elevations are free of snow, or you might get most of the way up and be forced to turn around and hike all the way back down.
