1871 Trail

USA> Hawaii> Big Island>

Overview

hike3.5int

This hike follows the 1871 Trail from Ho'okena Beach to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. You start off on a pretty rocky shoreline with tide pools and end up in the beautiful grounds of the park with traditional statues and structures surrounded by palm trees. There isn't much to see in the middle. The ancient Hawaiian trail parallels the coast, cutting across lava fields through dryland forest. The route is rough and overgrown much of the way, so allow for extra water and time on hot days.

Park in the lot at Ho'okena Beach Park. The lot can fill up quickly during the tourist season so it's best to arrive early.

For a much shorter hike you could drive directly to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau Historical Park and skip the 1871 Trail.
