Shafter Woodville

USA> Bay Area> Marin County>

Overview

hike3.7adv

This hike loops over Bolinas Ridge from Shafter Bridge to Woodville. Along the way are fire roads, steep climbs, conifer groves, chaparral highlands, valley views, mixed forest, grassy meadows and flowing creeks. For a shorter hike with less climbing skip Shafter Grade and start from one of the trailheads off Hwy 1. It's best to take the ridge loop clockwise as the Randall Trail is shorter, better graded and more shaded than the McCurdy Trail. Keep an eye out for poison oak along the Olema Valley Trail.

Getting there

Planning your trip

You may be able to park in the small lot at Shafter Bridge, labeled Leo T Cronin Fish Viewing Area on most maps. However the lot is small and can fill up quickly, and parking time is limited to a few hours. If you can't park at Shafter Bridge, look for a pullout west or east along Sir Francis Drake Blvd.

Dogs are allowed along most of the route where it passes through Marin Municipal Water District and GGNRA lands. However the Olema Valley Trail falls within Point Reyes National Seashore which prohibits dogs. If you hike with dogs you could turn back when you hit Highway 1 or walk along the highway to close the loop without breaking the rules.
