Makaua Falls

Overview

hike4.0int

This short, interesting hike leads to Makaua Falls. You start off on a singletrack trail through lush jungle and along Makaua Stream. Eventually the trail fades away and you work your way up the wild streambed, passing by small pools and through interesting narrows with a triple cascade. Finally you reach a dramatic narrow waterfall in an amphitheater of towering cliffs. Be prepared for mosquitoes, lots of rough and slippery terrain, knee-deep water and a couple rope scrambles up 8 ft rock faces.

Getting there

Planning your trip

Park in the lot at Swanzy Beach Park. Restrooms and showers are provided, and refreshments are available at the gas station across the highway.

Walk northwest toward the fire station, then turn left and walk up Huamalani Road. The unmarked trailhead is a small opening in the vegetation between two houses at the upper end of the street.

Please be respectful along Huamalani Road, walking quietly into the jungle without disturbing the calm along this small residential street.

Check the weather as the falls may not flow after a dry spell, while falling rocks and strong flow through the narrows could be dangerous after heavy rain.
