This challenging hike climbs Bear Claw Right ridge from Waimanalo to the Ko'olau Summit. This rarely traveled route features dramatic ridgetop terrain, satisfying scrambling and unspoiled jungle with occasional cliff and coast views. Challenges include tricky climbs up unstable rock faces, narrow spots, dangerous exposure and hours of fighting your way through dense overgrowth. Be wary of weathered rock that may crumble and fall on those below. The easiest exit is via the Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail.

Public access via the windward side is a bit of a gray area. Use your judgment.
Park near the intersection of Waikupanaha and Ahiki Streets. Observe back country parking etiquette: park with your wheels off the roadway and not too close to anyone's driveways or mailboxes. Note that break-ins have occurred in this area so don't leave anything valuable in sight. You may want to use an older, inconspicuous vehicle.
Walk east along Waikupanaha for a few minutes, then turn south on an unnamed gated road that leads to a water tank. You're following the edge of a private ranch property so keep quiet and be respectful of the residents. As you approach the water tank you'll see no trespassing signs and a security camera. It's unclear whether hikers are allowed here, but in any case your goal is to contour around the left side of the tank grounds - don't enter the fenced enclosure.
Once behind the water tank you're in open wilderness at the base of Bear Claw Left. To reach Bear Claw Right, traverse west through mostly-wild jungle for about 2,000 ft (600 m).
