This hike follows the southern portion of the Hopalong Cassidy trail. You start off climbing the very popular Homestead Trail past a covered picnic table to the Palm Desert Cross. Next you follow the much less traveled Hopalong Cassidy trail past a golf course, over ridges and across small canyons. Finally you join up with the Art Smith trail and descend to its trailhead on Highway 74. Highlights include colorful geology, cacti, a lush stream bottom with palm trees and frequent views over Palm Desert.
