This hike explores Lake Merced and Fort Funston. You'll enjoy lake views, marshes, shorebirds, picnic spots, a manicured golf course, sand dunes, coast views, convoluted bluffs, a long stretch of unspoiled beach and military ruins. There's a good chance you'll see hang gliders and lots of happy dogs. The route mostly travels along trails and beaches but there are a few less pleasant places around Lake Merced where you follow or cross busy thoroughfares. Be prepared for heavy sand throughout Fort Funston.
