USA> Palm Springs> Desert Cities>

Overview

hike3.0int

This hike loops through the west portion of Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve on the Herman's Hike trail. You'll enjoy two beautiful groves of California Fan Palms, a boardwalk through a lush oasis, a historic visitor center, a pond with birds and pupfish, quiet desert backcountry and Coachella Valley views. The route follows sandy trails and dirt roads with gentle slopes, making for a satisfying workout. There is a steeper 20-30 minute climb up to the summit but graded switchbacks keep things comfortable.

Park in the small lot at the Willis Palms trailhead near the south end of Thousand Palms Canyon Road. The hike begins across the road starting on the Hidden Palms trail and soon turning northeast toward the visitor center.

This route passes 3 trailheads with parking, so you could start from any one of them and do the loop in either direction. The advantage of starting from the Willis Palms trailhead and heading counterclockwise is you get gentle climbs and a downhill finish.
