Kalihi Saddle - Northwest

USA> Hawaii> Oahu>

Overview

hike3.5exp

This exciting and dangerous hike traverses the northwest half of Kalihi Saddle. You first climb Commando Ridge, then continue up the Bowman Trail to Pu'u Kahua'uli. Next you descend the KST through the saddle to its lowest point, then finish down Kalihi Powerlines. You'll enjoy big views, sheer cliffs and dramatic narrow spots. Sustained exposure and technical scrambles above big drops make this suitable for experts only. Check all ropes, and don't go without a guide unless you're sure of your abilities.

Getting there

Planning your trip

gray areadogs iffyyear-roundany vehicle

Access is tricky as the route starts and ends along Likelike Highway where traffic moves fast and parking is prohibited. The best bet is to arrange to be dropped off at the beginning and picked up at the end.

Stopping along the side of the highway requires caution and may be frowned upon by the authorities. Use your judgment.
