Pu'u O Ehu

Overview

hike2.0int

This hike explores Pu'u O Ehu, a small hill overlooking downtown Kailua. You follow faint, unmaintained trails along a ridge mostly overgrown with scrub forest and tall grass. You'll enjoy periodic high points with good views of the Kailua area. The further southeast you go the more overgrown it gets. You can either return the way you came or exit over a fence to Akiohala St and make it a loop. You may encounter unsanctioned campers near the highway. Keep an eye out for old barbed wire hidden in the grass.

Getting there

Planning your trip

The hike begins by walking along Kailua Rd and turning into the trees on an unnamed trail.

It's unclear whether the ridge is open to the public. Keep out signs are posted along Kailua Rd, yet the hill is crisscrossed by trails and shows signs of routine human presence. Use your judgment.
