This spectacular hike loops over the middle part of Rainbow Rocks rim. You'll enjoy hours of exploration along a lofty, convoluted rim of multicolored slickrock above dramatic cliffs with continuous views. You'll face frequent vertical exposure, tricky navigation and occasional rockfalls that force you to cross through steep, unstable terrain. The route includes sandy roads that can get uncomfortably hot on warm days. But if you're prepared for these challenges, this can be a rewarding adventure.
open accessapr - octhigh clearance
The hike includes 5.5 km (3.4 mi) of jeep roads across the valley floor. The suggested trailhead is a junction roughly midway along these roads.
If you have 4WD with high clearance, you can reach the trailhead either from the north via 10 Mile Road / Levi Well Road or from the south via Spring Canyon Point Road. From the north there is heavy sand that can develop closely-spaced sand waves 1-2 ft high. From the south there is rocky terrain with a 2 ft ledge. The approach from the north is technically easier since there are no rock obstacles and the sand waves can actually be kind of fun.
If you don't have high clearance, you could drive in from the south and stop before the rock obstacles become impractical. This would add up to 3 km (2 mi) roundtrip of easy jeep road walking to the hike.
