This epic hike loops over the west end of Big Mesa. You'll enjoy continuous views, dramatic clifftop terrain, hours of slickrock rim and a big sense of adventure. You'll face lots of steep terrain, scrambling and vertical exposure. Stay on the salmon-colored layers as much as possible, and look for faint game trails when forced up onto the overgrown white shelf. The alcove exit requires a risky climb down a 4 m (13 ft) wall. There's a fixed rope of unknown age, so bring a 50 ft length of your own.

You'll need 4WD with high clearance to reach the best starting point at the wash below Submarine Ramp.
If you have a less-capable vehicle, you could park on BLM 137 near the Lone Mesa Campground. If you compete the whole loop route you would pass near this spot anyway, so you wouldn't lose much time.
