This rewarding adventure loops around the rim of Tunnel Canyon. You'll enjoy hours of slickrock, dramatic terrain, colorful geology and continuous canyon views. Highlights include the lofty south rim, Tusher Gap, walking through Hidden Tunnel and a fun sense of exploration in this rarely-visited canyon. Walking the rim is mostly easy but there are two challenging sections. Be prepared for steep terrain, unstable soils, boulder scrambling, overgrowth, route-finding and short stretches of deep sand.

Getting there

Planning your trip

open accessdogs leashedmar - nov4WD vehicle

The hike starts at a junction where the 3D Jeep Safari Route crosses the wash draining Tunnel Canyon. You'll want 4WD to negotiate stretches of deep sand along this road.

If you have a 2WD vehicle with reasonable ground clearance you could drive out on Mill Canyon Road and park where it crosses Tusher Canyon wash. This dirt road has some rough spots but is usually suitable for highway vehicles if you're careful. Parking at Tusher Wash would lengthen the hike by about 3.8 km (2.4 mi) roundtrip.
