Herdina Park - Middle

USA> Moab> Arches>

Overview

hike5.0adv

This spectacular hike climbs through the middle of Herdina Park and explores its upper reaches. You'll enjoy sandstone cliffs and spires, hours of colorful slickrock, labyrinthine narrows, dramatic ridges and gullies, Beckwith Arch and a fun sense of adventure. The north ridges are fun to explore but involve vertical exposure - skip these if you're uncomfortable. Navigation is tricky so it's best to use GPS. Take care to preserve this pristine area by walking only on rocky surfaces or sandy wash bottoms.

Getting there

Planning your trip

fee accessno dogsmar - nov4WD vehicle

Park where the road crosses a wash with patches of exposed slickrock. The hike begins by walking up the wash.

The easier way to drive here is from the east. Drive into Arches National Park via the main entrance, follow the paved main road to Balanced Rock, then turn left onto unpaved Willow Springs Trail. This requires only basic 4WD to handle some sandy stretches, but depending on time of year and time of day you may need to get a reservation, wait in the entrance queue and pay an entrance fee.

Alternatively, you can get here by driving north on Hwy 191 and through Utahraptor State Park to reach Willow Springs Trail from the west. This avoids the Arches crowds but requires 4WD with high clearance to negotiate a series of 30 cm (1 ft) rock steps.
