Overview

hike4.0exp

This challenging adventure loops over Coyote Peak, a high point in the ridge between La Quinta Cove and Deep Canyon. You'll enjoy canyon exploration, fun scrambling, dramatic ridgetop terrain, commanding views and a big sense of accomplishment reaching this seldom-visited summit. Most of the route is off-trail, rough, steep and slippery. Frequent obstacles and route finding make for slow progress, requiring more time and endurance than the stats suggest. Bring plenty of water, avoid the heat and use GPS.

Getting there

Planning your trip

The summit has no official name. We call it Coyote Peak because it rises above adjacent Coyote Creek, the nearest named feature in the area.

We recommend hiking the loop clockwise. This lets you climb the more challenging and technical south canyon at the beginning when you're fresh, then later descend via the north canyon where an unofficial trail makes for an easier finish.

Most of the route travels public lands within the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. A short section near the summit crosses into the boundaries of the Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center, as does the upper section of the nearby Bear Creek Trail. Use your judgment.
